Introduction
Imagine if you will...
A world were you are part of a military simulation group,
a
nd you receive
this
mission statement:
- "PR002/ODA1234/HBI005"
Could you execute the mission?
After reading this guide, you will be able to: "EXECUTE...EXECUTE...EXECUTE"
The purpose of Mission Designation is:
Allow troops to quickly understand the basic mission type
Have a standardized method of mission naming
Mission Designation (MD) have 3 main parts to them:
•
Mission Designation
•
Unit Identifier
•
Mission Support Type
Having a systematic approach to MD allows units to better track past/current mission(s).
Mission Planning Basics
There are 2 basic forms of mission planning
•
Long term (>12 months)
•
Short term (<12 months)
'On-Call' missions are generally pre-planned (as best they can be)
Contingency planned mission are also generally pre-planned
Mission Planning (MDMP)
Part I
Mission Designation
There are 2 parts to the MD:
• Part 1 - Mission type
• Part 2 - Mission number
Mission type
is determined by an SOP list
Mission Number
is determined by a 3 digit chronological order (001; 002; 003 etc.)
Example:
PR002 = Personnel Recovery Mission #2 (a previous PR mission exists)
Part II
Unit Identifier
Unit Identifier
is also based on an existing SOP
Example:
ODA1234 = Operational Detachment Alpha TM 1234
Vehicle identifiers are:
• Hull #s
• Tail #s
• Ground Mobility Vehicle (GMVs) #s
There is no set number of min/max characters
***NOTE - Individual units/team need to have an SOP on unit/team identifiers***
Part III
Mission Support Type
There are 2 parts to the Mission Support Type:
•
Part 1 - Support mission action
•
Part 2 - Support mission number
Like the other parts,
Mission Support Type
comes from an SOP
Support Mission Number
is determined by a 3 digit chronological order (001; 002; 003 etc.)
Example:
HBI005 = Heliborne Insertion #5 (4 previous insertion missions exist)
Putting It All Together
Now, we take all 3 parts and add them together
Part I
- PR002
Part II
- ODA1234
Part III
- HBI005
"/" is used in between the 3 parts
Final example:
PR002/ODA1234/HBI005
From this brief and concise mission statement we can see:
• A Personnel Recovery mission (2nd PR mission)
• An SF ODA team has been tasked
• A heliborne insertion has been selected
Mission Designation for Gaming
Imagine if you will...
A world were you are part of a military simulation group,
a
nd you receive
this
mission statement:
- "PR002/ODA1234/HBI005"
Now
you can execute this mission.
From a website/social media/e-mail or similar communication, the mission order can be issued
A DTG (Date/Time/Group) is added to the communication for:
• Date of mission issue
• Date of mission start
An authentication code is given in the message to be authenticated by the end-user
Conclusion
MDs have 3 parts:
• Mission Designation
• Unit Type
• Mission Support Type
SOPs are used for all 3 parts
Each part is separated by "/"
