"The Army has found that some soldiers, if allowed to, will become careless and lax in the performance of minor barrack duties in their unit. They become accustomed to conditions in their immediate surroundings and overlook minor deficiencies. Should a soldier fall below the Army standard of performance, you can be assured that someone will notice those deficiencies immediately"
"...inspections often correct small problems before they become big problems"
On-the-spot corrections "...either the Soldier you are correcting does not know what the standard is or does not care what the standard is"
PCC/PCIs allow units to follow an SOP with ease and efficiency. It enables units to be prepared for on call/follow-up missions and prepare their equipment ahead of time; in order to remedy any deficiencies before their departure time.
Troops, their equipment and vehicles should have a standard PCC/PCI checklist. Leaders must maintain their unit standards by enforcing PCC/PCIs at all times
Categories of Inspections
Two categories of inspections:
• In-ranks
• In-quarters
In-rank: Personnel/equipment in a unit formation
In-quarter:
• Personal appearance/facility maintenance/sanitary conditions
Types of Inspections
There are 3 types of inspections:
• Command Inspections
• Staff Inspections
• Inspector General Inspections
Pre-Combat Checks
Pre-Combat Checks ensures that Soldiers at all levels are adequately prepared to execute operations as per unit SOP.
PCCs are specific and mission oriented checks that a unit conducts before combat operations.
PCIs are executed by leaders for 'spot check' inspections
If deficiencies arise from PCIs, the leader may have follow-up PCCs
On-the-Spot Corrections
"Making an informal, unscheduled check of equipment, soldiers or quarters is called an on-the-spot inspection"
Steps for OSCs:
• Preparation
• Conduct
• Follow-up
Corrective measure steps: • Correct the Soldier
• Address the issue at hand, not the Soldier
• Tackle one issue at a time, not gang-up on issues
• Once corrected, don't keep bringing it up
PCC/PCI SOPs
Regular, impartial inspections of important areas develop confidence, teamwork and soldiers’ pride in themselves and their equipment.
Pre-execution checks ensure that all planning and prerequisite training (soldier, leader and collective) are complete prior to the execution of training. They systematically prepare soldiers, trainers and resources to ensure training execution starts properly. Pre-execution checks provide the attention to detail needed to use resources efficiently.
